As was news in February, ICE was intending on leasing a new 83,000 square foot office space in northern Tukwila, a two minute drive from So-Called Boeing Airport, where they routinely deport innocent men, women, and children. Reports at the time from news channels such as Seattle Times gave disarming attitudes to the people in response, especially after the city of Tukwila put a six month moratorium. Personal investigations by people on the ground have found reasons to be worried.
An investigation of the former office space that ICE has now leased will see that there is internal construction ongoing, and several construction pick-up trucks outside the facility, previous signage on the building has been removed, and trespassing signs have been put up along the outskirts of the property. Whilst media might be dismissive – public statements made by both ICE, and the Sabey Corporation who is leasing out the property is worrying.
“Is it really news that when a federal agency hires more personnel that they need more space?” from an DHS representative operating in Tukwila currently, all but confirming that they have leased the property, even if they refuse to release the documents. According to city councilmembers, when asking the Sabey Corporation for a walk through of the property, the Sabey Corporation refused. Moratorium placed by the city of Tukwila is not only an ineffective measure, as it only ceases ICE from turning the office space into an active detention center (Notably, they can still use it for brief holding purposes of detainees), it additionally ends in less than 60 days. Stopping them before this expansion is fully established is as important as anything happening in Puget Sound currently.
In wake of the Prairieland Defendants being sentenced, and particularly the statement made by the judge, and the message of fear he wishes to strike into the hearts of those with an ideology of Anti-Fascism, a small collective is joining other protesters at this new ICE office in Tukwila, Riverfront Technical park, June 27th, 1:30 PM. We encourage anyone willing to come out in Black-Bloc to join us. Viva La Huelga, ¡Por la anarquía, por la humanidad libre!
